Outsourcing our beetle killing

The MLB All-Star Game caught my attention for baseball again, so I’ve been casually reading baseball-related stories on the Internet. It turns out that baseball could be facing a small problem — ash trees, used to make baseball bats, might be going exctinct. Happily, the government has an absolutely terrifying possible solution, according to the NYT.

As early as this summer, federal officials hope to set loose Asian wasps never seen in this country with the purpose of attacking the emerald ash borer, an Asian beetle accused of killing 25 million ash trees in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Maryland since it was spotted in the United States five years ago.

At first, I thought it said “assassin wasps,” but then I realized that it means assassin wasps. They’re being brought in specifically to kill. So I’m thinking, once they’ve killed the beetles, what do we do with all the wasps? And the answer is, we train them to become math teachers and nurses, which are in high demand.
