OK, OK, so I said we’d take it easy today, but I found another easy-to-digest piece of information. Hillary Clinton was on The Late Show with David Letterman last night and the NYT’s The Caucus blog posted video and text of her “Top 10″ campaign promises. Click through for the video or read ‘em here:
10. Bring stability and long term security to “The View.”
9. Each year on my birthday, every American gets a cupcake.
8. You’ll have the option of rolling dice against the IRS for double-or-nothing on your taxes.
7. Having trouble getting a flight and Air Force One is available -– it’s yours.
6. My vice president will never shoot anybody in the face.
5. Turn Gitmo into a Dairy Queen as soon as possible.
4. For over a century there have been only two Dakotas –- I plan to double that.
3. We will finally have a president who doesn’t mind pulling over and asking for directions. Am I right, ladies?
2. I will appoint a committee to find out what the heck is happening on “Lost.”
1. One more pantsuit joke and Letterman disappears.

Neither you nor I have the time for another mammoth post like yesterday’s right now, so instead of that, here’s an addendum. The Onion had a “What do you think?” feature on Sen. Larry Craig today. Have a great weekend!

Satire of tomorrow or, uh, earlier this week: I’ll be keeping an eye out for Sen. Larry Craig jokes, wherever they may be, looking for a bit of a cross-section of comedy. His alleged indiscretions are pretty vague and certainly not on the level of, say, Mark Foley’s, who never did really get made fun of in the MSC, or mainstream comedy*, outside of late-night monologue jokes. A quick video search returns a few not-very-funny spoofs, so we can always hope for more of that. Read the rest of this entry »

Satire and news don’t always get along, of course.
Berkeley Breathed’s comic in its various incarnations, now Opus, previously Bloom County, etc., has satirized everything from right-wing Christian evangelism to Greenpeace. But apparently the strip has gone too far this time; it dared to pose a joke at which fundamentalist Islam was the butt end.

Yesterday, The Onion was on point early with an Alberto Gonzales man-on-the-street piece. Plenty of folks in stand-up comedy will have a couple of jokes at the ready regarding recent news, but they typically don’t have to deliver them until 8:00 p.m. at the earliest. Getting even three jokes together, as The Onion did, very shortly after news breaks, is a bit of a challenge. The Onion had that posted by noon. I didn’t see exactly when it went up.
Maybe it sends people to read the real breaking news, too. I’d be curious to find out how many people subscribe to The Onion’s RSS feeds — and how many of those folks also subscribe to newsy feeds. But definitely not curious enough to go out and start, you know, asking people.
So, uh. How’s it going with you?

Here’s a weird victory for Yahoo! over Google. Clips of The Daily Show will appear on Yahoo! — including exclusive clips from Rob Riggle in Iraq. [Via PaidContent]

Let’s get physical:
I’ve been writing too much about The Daily Show. We’ll do more of that — and soon, I’m sure — but news and humor meet for drinks and go home and make poor decisions together in a variety of other places, too. Some of our recent discussion truly cries out for a segue to the blagonet (read: “blogosphere”).
We start with a great satire blog: Jon Swift. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday’s post concluded with a promise to ask a few people about the notion that conjuring up a “narrative” with which to frame the Democratic primary race might be a plot to sell more newspapers. In short, Sen. Barack Obama briefly (and offhandedly — I’m sure it wasn’t a serious condemnation, but I’m taking it seriously because it’s a problem when that kind of comment comes so naturally to people) implied that journalists would write “whatever sells papers.”
Our first responder is Ron Kaye, editor of the Daily News of Los Angeles. Here’s what he said in an email that he kindly took the time to send (the emphasis is mine): Read the rest of this entry »
