News and entertainment know what’s best. Let’s listen to them.

Dave in the press

Dave in the press

Occasionally someone in the press will mention Dave, typically while writing about something else.

“…playing an essential role building a comedic community in the industry-barren landscape of Colorado” –The Onion

The Denver Post says the Secret Circus is “redefining what it means to see live comedy and breathing energy into an art form that sorely needed it.”

Spin Magazine: Freak Train (a Denver show hosted by GerRee Anderson and Dave) is “One of the Best Times You’ll Have All Month”

“It’s kind of like talking to a crack addict that also happens to be a member of Mensa.” –Boulder Weekly

The Onion: “[Dave Burdick] gained prominence and critical acclaim with the show Secret Circus…”

“Lucky for us, a new breed of comedians has rejected the format. The alternative comedy movement of the 1990s has morphed into something unpredictable and cerebral. Something more akin to the visceral, anti-establishment ethos of punk and indie rock. Call it indie comedy.

…comedy troupes like Wrist Deep Productions and Secret Circus are finding larger, more appreciative audiences. They are redefining what it means to see live comedy and breathing energy into an art form that sorely needed it.”

The Onion - 8/06

Dave Burdick

the onion

Boulder’s Dave Burdick made a name for himself co-hosting the popular open-mic night at Redfish. After his departure, the comedian gained prominence and critical acclaim with the show Secret Circus, a live alternative-comedy revue featuring stand-up, videos, and whatever else Dave and his friends put together. He also co-hosts the variety show Freak Train at Denver’s Bug Theater and performs all over the Front Range.”

It’s a secret

“You know all about circuses: popcorn, elephant manure, clowns, clowns, clowns. But what, you whisper, is the deal with Saturday night’s Secret Circus at Boulder’s Old Main Chapel? All we can tell you is that it’s the brainchild of local funnyman Dave Burdick and that it promises a well-deserved evening of alternative comedy replete with cartoons, video and the efforts of local pros like Hippieman and Adam Cayton-Holland.”

Cirque du Something

The Secret Circus brings in the (offbeat) clowns.

“Some of my greatest friends from college were people that I considered comedy hippies,” says Boulder-based writer and comedian Dave Burdick. “They got into worshiping Del Close and the Upright Citizens Brigade and the spirit of improv. Lately, I’ve been realizing I’m a comedy hippie, too. I just haven’t had the time to formally get my membership card.”

Bureaucrats at the hippie comedy DMV will likely move Burdick to the head of the line — or at least bump him up a few spots — after today’s Secret Circus show, a free comedy event taking place at 8 p.m. at the Old Main building on the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus.
